This month, ZenCog hosted Jax REcycle for their semi-annual bike rehab. We can’t express how amazing it was to see so many of you come out on the rainiest day of September to build bikes for the folks over at the Sulzbacher Center. The Sulzbacher is such a great resource for the people in our community when we need a helping hand, and the men and women who received the bikes were determined, resilient folks recommended by their case workers to receive bikes to help them on their new paths: getting back on track, finding work, and moving on with their lives.
In six hours on September 7th, 2014, in weather alternating between a steady downpour and a gentle drizzle, we rebuilt almost forty adult bicycles and a handful of kids’ bikes. More than thirty of you – including ZenCog customers and staff, Bike Jax, mechanics from other shops like Bikes, Etc. kids from the neighborhood, and SORBA volunteers – came out to help, whether for an hour or the whole day, and we couldn’t be more grateful.
On Friday the 12th, we trailered the bikes downtown to the Sulzbacher Center for placement with candidates from the LifeSkills program. It was the largest single placement of bikes yet for Jax REcycle, and though we had forty bikes, a few participants had to be wait-listed until the next batch of bikes. We’re already looking forward to the next rehab day, and hope to see y’all again next time! Remember, Jax REcycle can accept adult and child bikes, frames, and components in decent shape, as well as cash donations to offset costs of tires, tubes, helmets, locks and lights. If you have bikes or other contributions available, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a drop-off.
